Believe me it was epic, probably the catch of the decade for me. I had never been to Rainier before. I was in town for one night after the end of leading an Alaska bear photo workshop and I knew we would not be rolling out until ten or there about, so I not so stealthily stumbled out of the room at 4 am and put Tipso Lake in the GPS. When I arrived I was confused and in the very dim pre dawn light could not located a composition I felt was worth shooting. I got in the car and turned up the heater, resolved to find coffee. As the road twisted up the hill something caught my attention just over the roadside berm. I pulled over, looked up the hill and to my surprise spotted a few bold patches of ground cover up the hill. Of course I was sure I would never get there in time, but again lady luck favored me with this great scene. It was one and done for that trip, but the good fortune I had here has brought me back to the Rainier wonderland many times.

Mount Rainier is the tallest mountain in Washington and the Cascade Range. This peak is located just east of Eatonville and just southeast of Seattle and Tacoma.[23] Mount Rainier is ranked third of the 128 ultra-prominent mountain peaks of the United States. Mount Rainier has a topographic prominence of 13,210 ft (4,026 m), which is greater than that of K2, the world's second-tallest mountain, at 13,189 ft (4,020 m).[24] On clear days it dominates the southeastern horizon in most of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area to such an extent that locals sometimes refer to it simply as "the Mountain".[25] On days of exceptional clarity, it can also be seen and photographed from as far away as Corvallis, Oregon (at Marys Peak), and Victoria, British Columbia.[26]
