Jess Lee Photography - Frequently Asked Questions

Thank you for your interest in Jess Lee Photography. Acquiring fine art photography for your space is an important decision, and I want to ensure you feel completely confident throughout the process. Below you'll find answers to the most common questions I receive. If you need additional information, please don't hesitate to Contact me directly.

About the Artist

What is your background as a photographer?

My journey into fine art photography began over forty years ago with a deep fascination for the natural world and the authentic spirit of the American West. My work spans multiple genres including landscape, nature, wildlife, cowboys, and fly fishing photography—each requiring unique skills, patience, and an intimate understanding of my subjects.

My photographs have been published by prestigious media outlets and are held in exclusive private and corporate collections worldwide. This recognition reflects not just technical excellence, but a dedication to capturing moments that resonate emotionally and tell compelling stories about the wild places and authentic lifestyles that define our natural heritage.

What drives me is the pursuit of that perfect convergence of light, subject, and moment—whether it's a dramatic storm sweeping across a mountain range, a cowboy working cattle at golden hour, a trout rising in pristine waters, or wildlife in its natural element. Each image represents not just technical mastery but a deep respect for and connection to my subjects.

Do you have an artist statement?

My work explores the profound beauty and untamed spirit of the natural world and the authentic Western lifestyle. From dramatic landscapes and intimate wildlife encounters to the timeless tradition of cowboys and the contemplative art of fly fishing, I seek to capture moments that transcend documentation and become windows into experiences worth preserving.

Each photograph is an invitation to pause and connect—with wild places that still exist, with traditions that endure, and with the sense of awe that comes from witnessing nature and authentic life at their most genuine. Whether it's the fury of an ocean storm, the quiet intensity of a wildlife portrait, the working poetry of ranch life, or the serene beauty of a mountain stream, my goal is to create images that evoke emotion and create lasting connections.

I believe fine art photography should transport the viewer and reveal the extraordinary within our world. My diverse portfolio reflects this commitment—from sweeping vistas to intimate moments, each image is crafted to share transformative experiences that resonate on a deeply personal level.

How do you create your images?

My process begins long before I press the shutter. I spend months researching locations, studying animal behavior, building relationships with ranching communities, and scouting fishing waters—planning each expedition around optimal conditions and authentic moments. I often return to the same location multiple times, sometimes over years, waiting for that perfect convergence of light, weather, atmosphere, and subject.

I use only the highest-resolution camera systems available today—cutting-edge 100+ megapixel professional cameras that represent the pinnacle of digital imaging technology are used for much of my work. These extraordinary cameras capture an unprecedented level of detail, allowing me to create prints of exceptional clarity and sharpness at virtually any size. Combined with the finest professional lenses available, this equipment ensures that every subtle texture, every nuance of light, and every critical detail is preserved.

In the field, I shoot exclusively in RAW format to capture maximum detail and color information. After capture, each image undergoes meticulous post-processing where I refine color, contrast, and tonality while remaining faithful to the actual scene and authentic moment. My goal is to recreate the emotional impact of being there—the grandeur of the landscape, the power of the wildlife, the authenticity of the working cowboy, the tranquility of the river—not to create something artificial.

From start to finish, each photograph represents countless hours of planning, patience, technical expertise, and dedication to craft.

How much do your limited edition fine art prints cost?

Print Prices Start at $249.

How do you determine the value and pricing of your work?

Several factors contribute to the pricing of each piece:

Artistic Merit & Recognition: My work's presence in prestigious publications and exclusive collections worldwide reflects its artistic value. Images that represent the pinnacle of my vision and required extraordinary effort, timing, or access to capture command premium pricing.

Technical Excellence: The use of state-of-the-art 100+ megapixel and other hi resoulation camera systems and professional-grade lenses ensures unparalleled image quality, detail, and printing capabilities that far exceed standard photography.

Edition Size: Generally works are limited to 200 editions total. Specific images and collections may very in quanity. As editions sell, prices increase to reflect growing scarcity. Early collectors benefit from the most accessible pricing.

Production Costs: Premium archival materials, museum-quality printing by the finest printers in America, and custom finishing involve substantial costs that are reflected in final pricing.

Size and Complexity: Larger prints and custom framed pieces require more materials, specialized production techniques, and careful handling, which affects pricing.

Market Position: My pricing reflects years of experience, the recognition my work has received, and its position within the fine art photography market, while remaining more accessible than traditional gallery representation.

About the Prints

What printing process do you use?

I exclusively use museum-quality printing processes for all my work. All works are produced with fine art digital printing methods that uses archival inks and produces prints with exceptional color accuracy, detail, and longevity.

For paper prints, I partner with master fine art printers who use 12-color archival pigment ink systems that ensure accurate color reproduction and prints that will last 100+ years under proper display conditions.

Metal and acrylic prints undergo specialized sublimation and face-mounting processes that fuse the image to the substrate, creating extraordinary depth and luminosity while maintaining archival standards.

The extraordinary resolution of my 100+ megapixel source files means that even very large prints retain incredible sharpness and detail—you can examine them closely and still discover new elements, textures, and nuances. Every print is individually inspected and color-verified against my master files before shipping.

What kind of paper and materials do you use?

Archival Paper Prints: I use premium photographic and fine art papers from world-renowned manufacturers including Hahnemühle, Canson Infinity, and Moab. Specific papers are selected based on each image's characteristics:

  • Smooth glossy photographic papers for images requiring maximum sharpness and color saturation
  • Fine art matte papers for images that benefit from a more painterly, gallery aesthetic
  • Textured papers for select pieces where surface adds to the artistic vision

All papers are acid-free, lignin-free, and rated for 100+ year longevity when properly displayed and cared for.

Metal Prints: ChromaLuxe aluminum panels with specialized coatings that receive dye-sublimation imaging for vibrant, durable results.

Acrylic Prints: Lumachrome process with optical-grade acrylic face-mounting for unparalleled clarity, depth, and color luminosity.

All inks are archival pigment-based systems from manufacturers like Epson UltraChrome and Canon Lucia, ensuring fade resistance and color stability for generations.

Are your prints limited editions?

Yes.

Once editions sell out, that image is permanently retired from production and will never be available again. This scarcity helps protect the investment value of collectors who own editions of that work—a practice that has contributed to my work being sought after by serious collectors worldwide.

As editions sell, prices typically increase in tiers to reflect growing rarity. Early collectors receive the most favorable pricing.

Are the prints signed and numbered?

Yes. Every print is individually numbered and signed. The signature and edition number (for example, "15/100") are digitally embedded on the face of the artwork in a discreet location that doesn't detract from the image—typically in a lower corner.

The placement and appearance of the signature are carefully considered for each image to maintain the artistic integrity of the composition while providing authentication.

Do prints come with a Certificate of Authenticity?

Absolutely. Every print includes an official Certificate of Authenticity that documents:

  • Print title and date of capture
  • Edition number (e.g., 15/100)
  • Print size and medium (paper, metal, or acrylic)
  • Materials used in production
  • My signature as the artist

How do you handle image cropping for different sizes?

I compose each image with multiple aspect ratios in mind, allowing flexibility for different size preferences while maintaining compositional integrity. When you order a print, the image is carefully cropped to the aspect ratio of your selected size, always prioritizing the strongest composition.

For images where cropping would compromise the artistic vision, I only offer sizes that match the original aspect ratio. If you're concerned about how a particular image will be cropped for your desired size, please contact me and I can provide a preview showing exactly what you'll receive.

Why do you use digital printing methods?

Modern digital printing technology has revolutionized fine art photography, offering several critical advantages that are particularly important when working with ultra-high-resolution 100+ megapixel files:

Superior Color Accuracy: Digital workflows allow precise color management from capture through printing, ensuring the final print matches my artistic vision with scientific precision.

Exceptional Detail Preservation: High-resolution digital printing is the only method capable of fully utilizing the extraordinary detail captured by 100+ megapixel cameras. Every subtle texture, every fine detail is preserved—something traditional processes simply cannot achieve with files of this magnitude.

Archival Longevity: Pigment-based archival inks used in professional giclée printing outlast traditional chemical processes, with properly displayed prints lasting 100+ years without fading.

Consistency: Digital processes ensure that edition 1 and edition 100 are identical in quality—critical for maintaining the integrity of limited editions in collections worldwide.

Environmental Responsibility: Digital printing eliminates toxic chemicals required in traditional darkroom processes.

The result is museum-quality artwork that exceeds the quality standards of traditional photographic processes while offering superior longevity and environmental benefits—which is why prestigious collections and galleries worldwide have embraced fine art digital printing.

When purchasing multiple prints, I'm happy to discuss pricing options. I work regularly with collectors building personal collections and corporations curating artwork for their facilities. Display & Care

How should I display my artwork?

Hanging: Most prints arrive ready to hang with professional mounting hardware already attached. Paper prints will require professional framing before display. Metal and acrylic prints come with concealed mounting systems for clean, contemporary installation.

For large or heavy pieces, I strongly recommend hiring a professional art installer to ensure proper and secure wall mounting—particularly important for valuable artwork.

Location: Display your artwork away from direct sunlight, which causes fading over time. Avoid locations with high humidity (like bathrooms) or extreme temperature fluctuations.

Height: The center of the artwork should be at eye level, typically 57-60 inches from the floor. When hanging above furniture, the bottom of the frame should be 6-8 inches above the furniture surface.

What's the best way to light fine art photography?

Proper lighting dramatically enhances the viewing experience and is particularly important for showcasing the exceptional detail captured by ultra-high-resolution photography:

Natural Light: Diffused natural light from nearby windows works beautifully, but avoid direct sunlight hitting the artwork.

LED Picture Lights: Adjustable LED picture lights mounted above the artwork provide focused, even illumination without heat or UV damage.

Track or Recessed Lighting: Adjustable gallery-style track lights or recessed can lights with LED bulbs allow precise positioning of light.

Color Temperature: Warm white LEDs (2700-3000K) typically complement fine art photography better than cool white.

Avoid: Halogen bulbs (excessive heat and UV), direct sunlight, and lighting that creates glare on the surface.

For specific recommendations for your space, see the lighting guide on my "Display Guidelines" page, or contact me for personalized advice.

How do I care for and clean my prints?

Archival Paper Prints (framed under glass):

  • Dust the glass with a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth
  • For stubborn marks, lightly dampen the cloth with distilled water or spray a small amount of glass cleaner onto the cloth (never directly onto the glass)
  • Dry immediately with a clean, dry cloth
  • Never use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals

Metal Prints:

  • Use a soft, lint-free microfiber cloth
  • For cleaning, use isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol or a mild glass cleaner
  • Apply cleaner to the cloth, not directly to the print
  • Wipe gently and dry with a clean cloth
  • Avoid abrasive materials that could scratch the surface

Acrylic Prints:

  • Use only a lint-free microfiber cloth
  • Clean with a solution of distilled water and fragrance-free, dye-free mild dish soap
  • Apply solution to cloth, wipe gently, and dry immediately
  • NEVER use glass cleaners, window sprays, or chemical solvents on acrylic—they will damage the surface

General Care:

  • Always handle artwork with clean hands or white cotton gloves
  • Keep in climate-controlled environments (avoid extreme temperature or humidity changes)
  • Inspect periodically for any signs of deterioration
  • For valuable pieces, consider professional art conservation services for deep cleaning

How can I protect my artwork long-term?

With proper care, your fine art photography will remain vibrant for generations:

  • Avoid direct sunlight: UV rays cause irreversible fading
  • Climate control: Maintain stable temperature and moderate humidity (40-50% relative humidity ideal)
  • LED lighting only: Use low-heat, low-UV LED bulbs for art lighting
  • Proper handling: Always use clean hands or cotton gloves when handling unframed prints
  • Professional framing: Use UV-protective glazing and acid-free materials for paper prints
  • Regular inspection: Check annually for any signs of fading, discoloration, or damage
  • Insurance: Consider adding valuable artwork to your homeowner's or collector's insurance policy—particularly important for pieces from recognized photographers in established collections

Returns, Exchanges & Policies

What is your return policy?

Because all prints are custom-produced specifically for you upon order, they cannot be returned, exchanged, or refunded once production begins. Production starts immediately upon order confirmation. This is standard practice throughout the fine art photography industry due to the custom nature of the work.

This policy ensures I can offer the highest quality at the best possible prices without maintaining costly inventory.

Can I cancel my order?

Due to the immediate start of custom production and the substantial material costs involved, orders cannot be cancelled once placed and payment has been processed. Production of your print begins within 24 hours of order confirmation.

Please be certain of your selection before completing your purchase. I'm always happy to answer questions or provide additional information before you order to ensure you're completely confident in your choice.

What if I change my mind about the size or image after ordering?

Once production has begun, changes cannot be made to the size, print medium, or image selection. Because production starts immediately and materials are custom-ordered for your specific piece, modifications are not possible after order confirmation.

I encourage you to take time to carefully consider your selection. Use the preview service to see how the artwork will look in your space, and contact me with any questions before ordering.

What should I do if I'm uncertain about my choice?

Please reach out before ordering! I'm here to help you make the right decision:

  • Use the complimentary room preview service to visualize the piece in your space
  • Ask about specific details regarding colors, sizing, or framing
  • Request additional photos or information about the image
  • Discuss which print medium would work best for your space and lighting conditions
  • Ask about the story behind the photograph

The more confident you are before ordering, the more you'll enjoy your artwork for years to come.
