Two fly fishers wading the Madison River, Montana, autumn foliage blazing red and gold, American flag on far bank — fine art print by Jess Lee

Stars and Stripes on the Madison — Fly Fishing Montana in Autumn

The Madison, Montana

There is a particular kind of American afternoon that belongs entirely to autumn in Montana — overcast sky, the river running steel-grey, the hillsides burning red and gold with the season's last color, and somewhere across the water, a flag moving in the wind. Jess Lee found it on the Madison River, where two anglers had waded out into the current, rods working the seams, completely absorbed in the old and quietly serious business of reading water.

The Madison River below Ennis, Montana is one of the great freestone trout streams of the American West — broader and more muscular here than its Yellowstone headwaters, running fast and cold through a valley that has been ranched, farmed, and fished for generations. In autumn, when the willow and dogwood along its banks turn every shade between amber and crimson, it becomes something else entirely: a landscape painter's river, a place where the light falls differently and the season makes itself impossible to ignore.

Jess Lee composed the image to hold all of it — the two figures anchoring the foreground current, the riot of fall color filling the middle distance, and the flag rising quietly above the road on the far bank. It is a photograph about place as much as fishing, about what it means to stand in a great American river on a October afternoon with nothing more pressing than the next cast.

Stars and Stripes on the Madison is available as a limited-edition fine art print in Lumachrome HD TruLife Acrylic, ChromaLuxe Metal, and Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper. Collectors drawn to the Madison River corridor will find a companion piece in First Cast — Fly Fishing the Madison River at Dawn, which captures the same river in the golden mist of a Yellowstone morning. Just make a note on your order that you would like the simple black external float frame, or Contact Jess to discuss this option.

Fine Art Print Purchase FAQ

This section answers the most common questions from collectors regarding quality, authenticity, materials, and ordering logistics for my limited-edition prints.

1. Quality, Materials, and Archival Longevity

Q: What makes Jess Lee's prints "museum-quality"?

A: My fine art prints are defined by exceptional resolution, professional craftsmanship, and the use of the industry's highest-grade archival materials. This ensures the image quality remains pristine for decades, meeting the standards required for gallery exhibitions and long-term private collections.

Q: What specific materials and printing processes are used?

A: I create prints using processes that guarantee maximum clarity and longevity:

  • Substrates: Available materials include Lumachrome® HD TruLife® Acrylic, Chromaluxe® Metal, and premium archival pigment prints on fine art cotton-rag paper.
  • Inks: Only fade-resistant, archival pigmented inks are used, offering a wider color gamut and superior durability compared to standard dye-based prints.
  • Resolution: Landscape work and considered wildlife portraits are captured on 100-megapixel medium format systems; fast-action wildlife is captured on 35mm-format professional bodies for frame rate and maneuverability. Each image is offered only at the sizes its own file genuinely supports.

2. Investment, Authenticity, and Exclusivity

Q: Why should I purchase a limited-edition print?

A: Limited editions are a hallmark of collectible art. By restricting the total number of copies produced for a specific image, the scarcity is guaranteed, which generally supports the artwork's collectible value and long-term investment potential. Once an edition is sold out, it is never reprinted.

Q: How is the print authenticated and numbered?

A: Every limited-edition fine art print is authenticated:

Signature: Each print is signed and numbered.
Certificate of Authenticity (COA): A formal Certificate of Authenticity is provided with every purchase. This document details the artwork title, total edition size, medium, and the specific number of your print (e.g., 5/100).
Provenance: This documentation verifies the print's origin and is essential for future appraisal or resale.

Q: What is the typical edition size for your work?

A: Edition sizes vary by image and reflect how repeatable the subject is. Most fall between 100 and 200; some are 50; a few are larger. Every image page states its own edition, and that number is fixed permanently the day it is published.

3. Ordering, Shipping, and Customer Service

Q: How long will it take to receive my print?

A: Since each limited-edition print is custom-crafted to your material and size specifications, production requires careful attention.

Production Time: Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for printing, finishing and quality control. Custom orders and the holiday season may run longer. Rush production is available at a 20-30% premium — contact me if you have a date to meet.
Shipping: Shipping times vary by destination, but tracking information is provided as soon as your artwork ships.

Q: How are the prints shipped, and are they insured?

A: All shipments are handled by professional art carriers and are fully insured against damage during transit.

Packaging: Prints are securely packaged in durable, custom-built crates or specialized art boxes designed to prevent damage.
Damage Policy: If your artwork arrives damaged, please contact me within 48 hours of delivery with photographic proof. I will immediately initiate an insurance claim and arrange for a prompt replacement at no cost to you.

Q: What is your return policy?

A: Due to the custom-made, limited-edition nature of the artwork, all sales are final once production has begun.

Once production has begun, changes cannot be made to the size, print medium, or image selection. Because production starts immediately and materials are custom-ordered for your specific piece, modifications are not possible after order confirmation.

I encourage you to take time to carefully consider your selection. Use the free room preview to see how the artwork will look in your space, and contact me with any questions before ordering.

We only offer replacements or credit if the product is damaged during shipping (see Damage Policy above).

U.S. orders ship FREE. Prints larger than 24"x36" require crating, and framed prints may carry an additional charge — shown before you complete your order. Contact Jess for an international shipping quote. Please allow 4-6 weeks for production and delivery.
