Mount Hood is a potentially active stratovolcano in the Cascade Volcanic Arc mountains. One of my favorite photographs locations of the wonderful Oregon Cascade Mountain Range. Often covered with clouds when Mt. Hood, the highest Mountain in Oregon at 11,249 ft, appears at sunrise it becomes the symbol of the beautiful Volicanic mountains of Oregon.
In this photo Mount Hood is capped in a rare lenticular cloud which dissipated quickly as the air warmed on this lovely spring morning. It was formed by a subduction zone on the Pacific coast. It is located about 50 miles (80 km) east-southeast of Portland, on the border between Clackamas and Hood River counties. In addition to being Oregon's highest mountain (11,249 ft) it is one of the loftiest mountains in the nation based on its prominence, and it offers the only year-round lift-served skiing in North America.
