The name is not an exaggeration. Paradise Valley, Montana — the broad corridor through which the Yellowstone River runs north out of the park and into the ranching country below Livingston — is one of the most quietly beautiful places in the American West, and in autumn, when the cottonwoods along the river turn full gold and the Absaroka Range catches the first dusting of snow on its upper ridges, it earns its name completely.
Jess Lee found his position on the grassy bank above the river on a stormy October afternoon, the light pressing low and cool under the cloud ceiling, turning the water a deep steel blue that made the gold of the cottonwoods and the amber of the bank grass burn all the warmer by contrast. In the middle of the river, a lone drift boat moved quietly downstream — one angler, one oarsman, the boat a small turquoise note in the broad grey current. On the far bank, a historic homestead cabin sits behind its fence line, red-roofed and unhurried, exactly where it has always been. Behind everything, the Absaroka Range fills the horizon in layers of blue and purple shadow.
It is a photograph about permanence — the river that has always run here, the ranch that has always stood there, the mountains that have always watched over both. The angler in the drift boat is new to this morning but ancient to this valley. He is doing what people have done on the Yellowstone River for as long as there have been people and rivers worth fishing.
