National Geographic Contributor · Africa Big Cat Expeditions · Former Gallery Owner · Exhibited in Fine Art Galleries
A cheetah mother and her cub sit side by side on the burnt Masai Mara plain in the aftermath of a grass fire — both scanning the open horizon, the cub learning to read the same world its mother has survived.
The Mara had burned the night before. By morning the plain was black and still, the charred grass low and flat, the air carrying that particular smell of ash and renewal that comes after fire moves through the ecosystem. It is a landscape that looks like an ending but functions as a beginning — the old growth cleared, the plain made open and legible, the predator-prey relationships suddenly recalibrated.
I found this pair perhaps an hour after first light.
The mother was sitting upright, fully alert, her gaze fixed on something in the middle distance I could not identify. The cub — old enough to travel with her but young enough to still carry that slightly oversized, uncertain quality of a cat not yet fully grown into itself — was pressed close against her, mirroring her posture, its own eyes tracking the same line of sight. Neither of them moved. They simply sat together on the burnt earth and looked out at what the fire had revealed.
What stopped me when I framed this image was not the drama of it — there is no drama here in the conventional sense. There is no chase, no kill, no moment of obvious action. What held me was something quieter: the transmission of knowledge between generations. The cub was not hunting. It was learning to look. It was learning the particular quality of attention that a cheetah needs to survive on the open plain — slow, methodical, patient — and it was learning it by sitting beside the animal that had mastered it.
The burnt Mara behind them is not incidental to this image. It is the context that makes it. Fire opens the landscape. It removes the concealment that prey animals depend on and that predators must learn to work around. For a young cheetah still learning to hunt, a post-fire plain is as close to a classroom as the Mara offers. The mother knew this. She had brought her cub here deliberately, I believe, or at the very least had chosen to stay when the fire passed rather than move to unburnt ground.
The flat, directionless light of that morning — softened by smoke still hanging at the horizon — rendered both animals with extraordinary evenness. No harsh shadow. Every spot on both coats visible and precise. The dark plain behind them created a separation that no amount of technical skill could have manufactured. It was simply there, given by the fire and the hour and the patience to be present when it happened.
This image is paired in my Masai Mara fire collection with Sovereign of Ash — the lone adult male on the termite mound made the same morning. Together they form a complete document of what the Mara looked like in those hours after the burn: one animal alone on high ground, sovereign and still; another teaching a younger one how to see.

A: Limited editions are a hallmark of collectible art. By restricting the total number of copies produced for a specific image, the scarcity is guaranteed, which generally supports the artwork's collectible value and long-term investment potential. Once an edition is sold out, it is never reprinted.
A: Every limited-edition fine art print is authenticated:
Signature: Each print is signed and numbered.
Certificate of Authenticity (COA): A formal Certificate of Authenticity is provided with every purchase. This document details the artwork title, total edition size, medium, and the specific number of your print (e.g., 5/100).
Provenance: This documentation verifies the print's origin and is essential for future appraisal or resale.
A: Edition sizes vary by image and reflect how repeatable the subject is. Most fall between 100 and 200; some are 50; a few are larger. Every image page states its own edition, and that number is fixed permanently the day it is published.
A: Since each limited-edition print is custom-crafted to your material and size specifications, production requires careful attention.
Production Time: Please allow 4 to 6 weeks for printing, finishing and quality control. Custom orders and the holiday season may run longer. Rush production is available at a 20-30% premium — contact me if you have a date to meet.
