The High Ground — Cheetah Mother and Cubs Fine Art Print | Masai Mara | Jess Lee
Africa
A cheetah mother lies atop a scorched termite mound on the burnt Masai Mara plain, two cubs at her feet — one alert at her right, one resting at her left — the blackened plain stretching empty in every direction. She is watching something. She is always watching something.
This is the same mother I had been following since first light. By the time I made this frame she had already moved her cubs across a wide section of the burnt plain, pausing at intervals to scan, to assess, to decide. The fire had been through here the night before. The grass was black. The air still carried smoke. And she had brought her cubs — small enough that the burnt stubble came to their chests — out into the open ground that the fire had made, and climbed the highest point available, and was doing what cheetah mothers do: watching everything at once.
The composition here is not something I arranged. It is something the family arranged, and I was fortunate enough to be positioned to receive it.
The mother is on the apex of the mound, stretched long, her tail curving down the slope behind her. She is facing into the middle distance — not alarmed, not hunting, simply maintaining the continuous low-level surveillance that keeps her cubs alive. The cub on her right is sitting upright, facing the same direction, already practicing the posture its mother has spent years perfecting. The cub on her left has given up on vigilance for the moment and is lying flat, chin on the black earth, content to let its sibling and its mother do the watching.
Three animals. Three postures. One family, one mound, one burnt plain.
What this image gives a viewer that most wildlife photographs do not is a complete social unit in a single frame — the hierarchy made visible, the relationships legible without explanation. The mother elevated, commanding, responsible. One cub learning. One cub resting. The dynamic of any family, rendered in spotted cats on a scorched termite mound in the middle of the Masai Mara.
The light that morning was flat and even — smoke-softened, with no hard shadow — and it treated all three animals with the same clarity. Every spot on the mother's coat, every whisker on the alert cub's face, the relaxed sprawl of the resting one — all of it visible, all of it precise. The dark ground behind them provided a separation that no studio could manufacture. The fire gave me the background. The family gave me the composition. I gave it patience and a long lens and the sense to stay still.
This image is part of my Masai Mara Fire Collection — a series made across a single morning after a grass fire swept the central plain. It is the image in that collection I return to most. Not because it is the most dramatic, but because it is the most complete: a family portrait made on a burnt African plain, in the hours after the world they lived in had been reduced to ash and was already, quietly, beginning again.

Fine Art Print Purchase FAQ
This section answers the most common questions from collectors regarding quality, authenticity, materials, and ordering logistics for my limited-edition prints.
1. Quality, Materials, and Archival Longevity
Q: What makes Jess Lee's prints "museum-quality"?
A: My fine art prints are defined by exceptional resolution, professional craftsmanship, and the use of the industry's highest-grade archival materials. This ensures the image quality remains pristine for decades, meeting the standards required for gallery exhibitions and long-term private collections.
Q: What specific materials and printing processes are used?
A: I create prints using processes that guarantee maximum clarity and longevity:
- Substrates: Available materials include Lumachrome® HD Acrylic, Exhibition Mounted Metal, and premium Archival Pigment Prints on fine art cotton-rag papers (often referred to as Giclée).

2. Investment, Authenticity, and Exclusivity
Q: Why should I purchase a limited-edition print?
A: Limited editions are a hallmark of collectible art. By restricting the total number of copies produced for a specific image, the scarcity is guaranteed, which generally supports the artwork's collectible value and long-term investment potential. Once an edition is sold out, it is never reprinted.
Q: How is the print authenticated and numbered?
A: Every limited-edition fine art print is meticulously authenticated:
- Signature: Each print is hand-signed and numbered by Jess Lee.
- Certificate of Authenticity (COA): A formal Certificate of Authenticity is provided with every purchase. This document details the artwork title, total edition size, medium, and the specific number of your print (e.g., 5/100).
- Provenance: This documentation verifies the print's origin and is essential for future appraisal or resale.
Q: What is the typical edition size for your work?
A: Edition sizes vary based on the image's format and style but are generally small to preserve exclusivity. Prints are often split across sizes (e.g., 50 copies total across all offered sizes). Check the individual print page for the exact, guaranteed edition limit.
3. Ordering, Shipping, and Customer Service
Q: How long will it take to receive my print?
A: Since each limited-edition print is custom-crafted to your material and size specifications, production requires careful attention.
