Brothers in the Thornbush — Cheetah Coalition Fine Art Print | Serengeti | Jess Lee
Africa
National Geographic Contributor · Africa Big Cat Expeditions · Former Gallery Owner · Exhibited in Fine Art Galleries
Two cheetahs move through dry Serengeti thornbush — spread apart, each facing a different direction, reading the scrub in the particular way that only coalition males can. They are not two animals in the same place. They are one hunting unit operating across two points in space.
Most people think of cheetahs as solitary. The females are. But male coalitions — almost always brothers from the same litter — are one of the least-understood and most compelling social structures in the African bush. Coalition males live and hunt together for life. They share territory, share kills, and over years develop a coordination so precise it resembles something close to strategy. One animal moves into cover while the other holds position. One flushes while the other cuts off the escape route. They do not need to look at each other to know where the other is.
I found these two in the Serengeti's central thornbush country, where the open grass plains give way to acacia scrub and dry seasonal drainage lines. It is harder country to photograph than the open plain — the vegetation breaks sight lines, the light filters unevenly through the canopy, and animals move in and out of visibility in seconds. The challenge is to find the moment when both animals are simultaneously visible and simultaneously in relationship with each other.
This was that moment.
The spacing between them is exact — far enough apart to cover maximum ground, close enough to react to the other's movement instantly. One is scanning left, one is scanning right. The dry grass and thornbush surrounds them in every direction, and yet they are entirely relaxed within it, moving with the ease of animals that have worked this terrain together for years. The muted palette of the dry season — silver-grey thornbush, pale gold grass, the flat light of an overcast Serengeti morning — gives the image a stillness that the two animals belie with their focused attention.
What I find myself returning to in this image is the quality of the relationship it implies. These are not two cheetahs that happen to be near each other. They are partners in the oldest sense of the word — animals whose survival depends on each other and who have organized their entire lives around that dependency. You cannot see that bond in a single frame. But you can feel it in the spacing, the posture, the way each animal orients itself as half of something larger.
The Serengeti thornbush country where this was made is the same terrain these coalitions range across year-round — following the prey migrations, working the drainage lines, holding territories that can span fifty miles. To find them in a moment of stillness, visible simultaneously, is a rarity that most visitors to the Serengeti never experience. I have photographed cheetahs across East and Southern Africa for decades, and coalition males in the scrub remain among the most difficult and rewarding subjects in all of wildlife photography.

1. Quality, Materials, and Archival Longevity
Q: What makes Jess Lee's prints "museum-quality"?
A: My fine art prints are defined by exceptional resolution, professional craftsmanship, and the use of the industry's highest-grade archival materials. 2. Investment, Authenticity, and Exclusivity
Q: Why should I purchase a limited-edition print?
A: Limited editions are a hallmark of collectible art. By restricting the total number of copies produced for a specific image, the scarcity is guaranteed, which generally supports the artwork's collectible value and long-term investment potential. Once an edition is sold out, it is never reprinted.
Q: How is the print authenticated and numbered?
A: Every limited-edition fine art print is meticulously authenticated:
- Signature: Each print is hand-signed and numbered by Jess Lee.
- Certificate of Authenticity (COA): A formal Certificate of Authenticity is provided with every purchase. This document details the artwork title, total edition size, medium, and the specific number of your print (e.g., 5/100).
- Provenance: This documentation verifies the print's origin and is essential for future appraisal or resale.
Q: What is the typical edition size for your work?
A: Edition sizes vary based on the image's format and style but are generally small to preserve exclusivity. Prints are often split across sizes (e.g., 50 copies total across all offered sizes). Check the individual print page for the exact, guaranteed edition limit.
3. Ordering, Shipping, and Customer Service
Q: How long will it take to receive my print?
A: Since each limited-edition print is custom-crafted to your material and size specifications, production requires careful attention.
