A Photographer's Love of Alaska's Untamed Beauty

For over five decades, I've been privileged to witness Alaska's raw magnificence through my lens. From the towering peaks of Denali to the pristine wilderness of Katmai, my journey as a landscape photographer has been inseparably woven with Alaska's untamed spirit. What began as a young photographer's fascination with the Last Frontier has evolved into a lifelong commitment to capturing and preserving the essence of America's greatest wilderness.

The Call of the Wild: My First Alaska Adventure

My relationship with Alaska began in the early 1970s, when the state still felt like the edge of the world. Armed with basic camera equipment and an insatiable curiosity about nature's wonders, I made my first journey north. Nothing could have prepared me for the sheer scale and beauty that awaited me. The vastness of the landscape, the quality of light, and the sense of being truly alone in pristine wilderness ignited a passion that has driven my work for five decades.

That first trip to Denali National Park changed everything. It started as a flyin float trip hat is a story of leaking rafts, missing sleeping bags, standing along ona masive rock in the middle of a spring swollen river watching our unmaned baost drift down stream. Truely a trip of deliverance.

At the end of that trip while standing before North America's highest peak, watching the alpenglow paint those snow-covered slopes in ethereal hues, I knew I had found my calling. The mountain demanded respect, patience, and dedication—qualities that would define my approach to Alaska photography for the rest of my career.

Denali: The Crown Jewel of My Collection

Over the decades, I've returned to Denali countless times, each visit revealing new facets of this magnificent landscape. The park has provided some of my most sought-after images, including my famous "Denali Reflection" piece, which has been the number one choice of collectors at galleries and art shows for the past decade.

Denali teaches you patience. I've waited days for the mountain to emerge from clouds, spending hours at Wonder Lake waiting for that perfect moment when the wind stills and the water becomes a mirror. The reward—capturing Denali's majestic reflection doubled in the pristine lake—makes every moment of waiting worthwhile. These images represent more than just photography; they're testimonies to the enduring power of wilderness to inspire and humble us.

The seasonal transformations in Denali have provided endless photographic opportunities. From the vibrant autumn colors that blanket the tundra in gold and crimson to the ethereal beauty of winter's aurora dancing over snow-clad peaks, each season offers its own magic. My "Denali Gold" captures that fleeting moment when fall transforms the landscape into a tapestry of color, while my winter images showcase the park's stark, otherworldly beauty.

Katmai: Where Wilderness Meets Wildlife Drama

My work in Katmai National Park represents some of the most challenging and rewarding photography of my career. This remote wilderness, accessible only by float plane or boat, has provided unparalleled opportunities to document Alaska's magnificent brown bears in their natural habitat. Leading photography workshops to Katmai, I've guided photographers to witness and capture the raw power and grace of these incredible animals.

From our private lodge on the shores of Lake Iliamna, nestled between Katmai, McNeil River, and Lake Clark, we venture out daily to photograph bears at the peak of salmon fishing season. The intensity of watching a massive brown bear plunge into rushing water, emerging with a salmon clenched in its jaws, never diminishes. These moments require split-second timing and an understanding of bear behavior developed over decades of observation.

My limited edition prints of Katmai's grizzlies fishing for salmon capture what I consider some of the most dramatic wildlife action available anywhere in the world. The image of a mother grizzly nursing her cubs remains one of my most treasured captures—a tender moment in the midst of Alaska's wildest landscape.

Lake Clark: Hidden Jewel of the Alaska Range

Lake Clark National Park, once one of Alaska's best-kept secrets, has provided some of my most intimate landscape photography. This park offers a rare combination of coastal and interior Alaska landscapes, where glacial lakes reflect towering peaks and massive glaciers carve their way through ancient valleys.

The diversity within Lake Clark is staggering. In a single day, I can photograph coastal scenes reminiscent of southeastern Alaska, then turn inland to capture alpine meadows and glacial moraines that rival anything in Denali. The park's relative obscurity means I often have these incredible vistas entirely to myself—a photographer's dream in our increasingly crowded world.

Kenai Fjords: Where Ice Meets Sea

The coastal wilderness of Kenai Fjords National Park represents a different facet of Alaska's beauty. Here, massive tidewater glaciers calve into the sea with thunderous roars, creating scenes of both beauty and raw power. The interplay of ice, water, and light in the fjords creates photography opportunities unlike anywhere else on Earth.

My images from Kenai Fjords capture the drama of glacial processes in action—the deep blues of compressed ice, the moment when thousand-year-old ice meets the sea, and the wildlife that thrives in these nutrient-rich waters. These photographs tell the story of a landscape in constant motion, shaped by forces that dwarf human experience.

The Brooks Range: America's Arctic Wilderness

Perhaps no landscape has challenged me more as a photographer than the Brooks Range. This ancient mountain chain, stretching over 700 miles across northern Alaska, represents wilderness in its purest form. The logistics of photographing in the Brooks Range are daunting—harsh weather, extreme remoteness, and unpredictable conditions—but the rewards are extraordinary.

The midnight sun of Arctic summer creates surreal lighting conditions that seem to defy physics. Long shadows stretch across endless tundra, while peaks are bathed in warm light at hours when most of the world sleeps. My Brooks Range images capture this otherworldly quality—landscapes that appear untouched by time, where caribou migrations have followed the same paths for millennia.

The Alaska Range: Backbone of the Continent

Beyond Denali, the Alaska Range has provided countless photographic opportunities. From the glaciated peaks near Talkeetna to the remote summits visible only from bush planes, this mountain chain represents Alaska's geological heart. My large-format prints of Alaska Range peaks, some measuring up to 90x120 inches, allow viewers to experience the overwhelming scale of these landscapes.

The technical challenges of photographing in the Alaska Range have pushed me to refine my craft continually. Extreme cold that freezes camera mechanisms, weather that changes in minutes, and the physical demands of accessing remote locations have all contributed to my growth as a photographer. These challenges ensure that every successful image represents not just artistic vision but perseverance and dedication.

The Kenai Peninsula: Alaska's Accessible Wilderness

The Kenai Peninsula offers a different kind of Alaska experience—wilderness that's relatively accessible yet still profoundly wild. From the alpine lakes of the Kenai Mountains to the sweeping vistas along the Sterling Highway, this region has provided countless opportunities for intimate landscape photography.

My work on the Kenai captures the diversity of Alaska's landscapes within a relatively compact area. Glacier-fed rivers, old-growth forests, alpine meadows, and coastal wetlands all coexist within this remarkable peninsula. These images demonstrate that Alaska's beauty isn't limited to its most remote corners—extraordinary landscapes await those willing to explore.

Talkeetna: Gateway to Denali's Majesty

The charming town of Talkeetna has served as base camp for many of my Alaska adventures. From here, bush pilots ferry climbers and photographers to Denali's remote corners, and the town itself offers stunning views of the Alaska Range on clear days. My images from the Talkeetna area capture both the frontier spirit of Alaska's communities and the overwhelming presence of the mountains that dominate the horizon.

Technical Evolution: Five Decades of Photographic Innovation

My approach to Alaska photography has evolved dramatically over five decades. I began with basic 35mm equipment, graduated to medium format, and eventually embraced large-format photography for its unmatched detail and dynamic range. The transition to digital photography opened new possibilities while presenting fresh challenges in harsh Arctic conditions.

Throughout these technological changes, my philosophy has remained constant: the best photographs are more than pleasing scenes composed in great light. The best photography shows a sense of place, captures the essence of the moment, and transports the viewer to that time and place. This philosophy has guided every image I've created in Alaska's wilderness.

Conservation Through Photography

My five decades of Alaska photography have made me a witness to change. I've documented glacial recession, witnessed shifts in wildlife patterns, and observed the impacts of climate change on landscapes I've photographed for decades. These images serve not just as art but as historical documents of Alaska's wilderness during a period of unprecedented global change.

Through my museum-quality fine art prints, I hope to inspire others to appreciate and protect Alaska's wilderness. Each limited edition print represents not just a moment captured but a commitment to preserving these landscapes for future generations. When collectors acquire my Alaska images, they become partners in conservation, supporting both the documentation and protection of America's last great wilderness.

The Workshop Experience: Sharing Alaska's Magic

Leading photography workshops throughout Alaska has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career. Sharing these incredible locations with fellow photographers, watching them experience Alaska's magic for the first time, reminds me why I fell in love with this landscape decades ago. From aurora photography near the Arctic Circle to bear photography in Katmai, these workshops allow me to pass on not just technical knowledge but a deep appreciation for Alaska's wilderness.

Legacy in Light: Looking Forward

As I reflect on five decades of Alaska photography, I'm struck by both the consistency and the change. Alaska's fundamental character—its vastness, its wildness, its ability to humble and inspire—remains unchanged. Yet the details reveal a landscape in transition, making my documentary work more important than ever.

My Alaska portfolio now includes thousands of images spanning half a century, from the early film days to today's digital masterpieces. Each image tells part of Alaska's story, and together they form a comprehensive record of America's greatest wilderness during a critical period in its history.

The limited edition prints now available through my gallery represent the culmination of five decades spent in Alaska's wilderness. These museum-quality pieces, crafted using the finest materials and printing techniques, ensure that Alaska's beauty will inspire viewers for generations to come. From dramatic Denali reflections to intimate wildlife moments, each print carries with it the story of countless adventures, patient waiting, and unwavering dedication to capturing Alaska's essence.

As I continue to explore and photograph Alaska's wilderness, I'm reminded daily why this landscape has held me captive for five decades. In an increasingly connected world, Alaska remains a place where one can still experience true solitude, witness landscapes unchanged for millennia, and feel the humbling presence of forces greater than ourselves.

My journey through Alaska's wilderness continues, driven by the same passion that brought me north fifty years ago. Each trip reveals new wonders, each season offers fresh perspectives, and each photograph adds another chapter to the ongoing story of America's last frontier. Through my lens, I've been privileged to witness and share Alaska's enduring magic—a magic that I hope will inspire protection and appreciation of this irreplaceable wilderness for generations to come.
