Subterranean Light: Sandstone Sculpture, Beams, and Reflected Radiance

Nothing inside a slot canyon is lit directly. Direct sun rarely strikes the subterranean floor; instead, overhead light reflects off curving Navajo sandstone walls, bouncing through narrow chambers until the stone appears to glow from within. As light filters downward, canyon walls shift continuously through a spectrum of fiery vermilion, deep terracotta, golden amber, and cool violet.

Spanning work initiated in 1999—captured on large and medium format film transparencies and high-resolution digital systems—this is a closed, finite body of work documenting iconic locations before strict commercial tour restrictions. My earliest work in Lower Antelope Canyon dates back to 1999. I did not enter on a crowded tourist permit; Kenny Young, whose family clan holds stewardship over the canyon, brought me in personally. We spent entire unguided days studying how subterranean chambers come alive hour by hour as the sun angles across the desert surface. Over subsequent years, I returned repeatedly to work alone in Upper and Lower Antelope—including night exposures beneath desert stars.

Because slot canyons are now managed strictly on timed, group-guided schedules, this level of solitary, unhurried capture is no longer possible. Captured on medium- and large-format film transparencies alongside digital returns, every image in this collection represents a historic, non-repeatable era of Southwest photography.
