The Amazing Beauty of Sandstone Slot Canyons
A very special feature in the Red Rock Country of Arizona and Utah are the Slot Canyons. They are formed as the result of flash flood waters rushing through and eroding the soft, sandstone walls of the canyons. They can present a serious danger of drowning if you are caught in one when it rains in a upstream location.
For Landscape Photography, the most famous of the Slot Canyons are the Antelope Canyons near Page, Arizona. They are particularly known for beams of light that come through small openings on the top of the canyons and interact with dust from the sand inside the canyon.
Most of the slot canyons, like the Antelope Canyons, Canyon X, Secret Canyon and others are on private Navajo Lands and require a permit or a guide to photograph. Buckskin Gulch is a beautiful, 21 mile long canyon that requires only a simple permit from the Bureau of Land Management.
