Yellowstone By Snowmobile, Winter Photography Special

March 1 - 7

2010

This will be a very special trip and possibly the last chance ever to experience the splendor of photographing the interior of Yellowstone by snowmobile.

There are many issues around the use of snowmobiles in Yellowstone, some more valid that others. One thing that can be said for sure is that there is nothing like the sense of freedom and place you have when riding snowmobile in this winter wonderland. Due to current regulations the 2009 season may be the last time visitors can have this experience. While for many, the snowcoach we usually use is the way for a photographer to work in this sometimes harsh environment. Yet there are times when the flexibility of using a snowmobile can offer the most rewarding opportunities.

During the first two days of our adventure we will be based in West Yellowstone Montana where we will begin the snowmobile portion of our trip into the interior of Yellowstone. We will visit the steaming geysers and thermal areas of Norris Geyser Basin, Old Faithful, Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and the winter wilderness of Hayden Valley. While we travel from place to place on the best available technology (quiet) snowmobiles we will be stopping often to catch the perfect ice rimmed bison, snow encrusted elk or the possibility of a hunting wolf.

Wednesday morning will find us heading for the animal rich Lamar valley, the wintering home of Bison, Elk, , Coyotes, Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope, and several packs of wolves. We will also have chances along the way to search for Trumpeter Swans, Bald Eagles and Moose. Here as with the exception of our snowmobile trip your transportation will be by all wheel drive van which give us the chance at being the first group in the valley each morning while the 2 wheel drive vehicles wait for the roads to clear. During our time in the north range we will have special evening presentations by world renowned wildlife experts and film makers. This will give you a real inside look into the Yellowstone world of wildlife.

Winter in Yellowstone, steaming geysers, boiling hot springs and possibly the best winter large mammal photo opportunity on the planet make this a special trip. During your time in Yellowstone we will concentrate on capturing the essence of wintering in the world's first National Park. From pre dawn to after the last twilight we will hunt for images of the beauty of this land in the grip of winter. Our quest will include the master of all hunters, the charismatic wild wolf. Our hunting ground will be the wonderland of Yellowstone in winter with steaming thermal areas, frost covered wildlife, pristine snow covered wild lands. This will not be like autumn elk, Florida shore birds or Bosque snow geese but if you have dreamed of photographing wild wolves I feel this is your best chance. My wild wolf images have appeared in prestigious publications such as National Wildlife, Defenders of Wildlife, Backpacker and many more. Of course we will also photograph the wintering home of ice rimed Bison, Elk, Moose, Coyotes, Bighorn Sheep, Mule Deer, Pronghorn Antelope,Trumpeter Swans, and Bald Eagles.

As with all wildlife photography there are no guarantees of photographing wolves but we have had many days of photographing wolves during the years I have been doing winter in yellowstone tour...
