Focusing on the Great Divide Basin HMA in Southwest Wyoming

Join our Wild Horse Photography Workshop in the heart of the mustangs range during the peak of the foaling breeding season..

Wild Mustangs evoke the romanticism of the old west. Having always been symbols of the West and living examples of a wide-open landscape and the untamed frontier spirit of what once was and what should always be. The wild horses of Wyoming are a photographer’s dream. Today those dreams are vanishing for many people as the Wild horse herds are getting smaller. Great Divide basin is scheduled to have the wild horse numbers reduced in the summer of 2014. This may be one of the last chances to witness and photograph large herd of some of the most iconic Wild Horses in the west during the height of the foaling and breeding season.

The Future of our Wild Horses

At the turn of the 19th century there were millions of horses running free on the Western range. By the time bills passed to protect them in 1959, 1968 and 1971, the vast herds had become so reduced that they actually faced extinction. We are once again facing the total destruction of our wild horses. Under the BLM, the Wild Horse and Burro Program has lost 12.5 million acres of grazing land and the herd areas have dropped from 303 to 201. Herds whose numbers one reached into the hundreds, are all but gone. It is the irony of the law, the clash between “management” and “preservation”, can we find a door to a vision for a positive resolution to the debacle now unfolding in wild horse country? This photographer hopes so.
