Yellowstone hot spring

I rarely post about cameras since I believe the Canon/Nikon/Sony battle is one of the least relevant issues for todays photographers.
That said I think the arrival on the Nikon D4 and its availability at B&H today is relevant.
Not because it is so great (and it would seem to be) but because this camera is symbolic of what is happening in the industry today.

To summ up my view of the latest path of the big 2 Canon and Nikon I will just say that it looks from here like Canon has taken the path of marketing more for video and forsaking the still shooter especially those who shoot Sports, Nature and Wildlife. Yes the new Canon DX will have lightning like speed for those shooting JPGS but full frame at 16 mp and no ability to auto focus at F8? This camera would surly be a step back for photographers like me.
Yes I am sure it will have better noise than the 7d or even the great mk4 or the now gone 1DS III, but what are the other real advantages? Not much for my shooting style. Loss of MPS from the 1DsmkIII or the 1.3 crop fact of the MK4 are real downsides for me.

So what does the latest Nikon D4 offer? At this point we can only go from what the maker says but things like the better noise than the current low noise champ the Nikon D3s, continued auto focus at F8 (yes that is a big deal for wildlife shooters) more improvement to the already best in class autofocus, plus what seems to be $1000. cheaper than the comparable (a loose term in this case) Canon product makes this spring a very interesting time to watch as these camera hit the real world tester such as ourselves.

So will I switch from Canon?

UMMM time will tell but I am watching!

Those of you who have studied the wonderful works of the mater landscape photographers are aware that most of their great classic landscape photos were made with the aid of a view camera. This camera and its extensive movements allow the user to control perspective, extend depth of field and to make their compositions rise above the normal snapshot. In todays digital world most of the masters of the landscape image have switch to digital cameras but they still use the same techniques learned from decades of view camera use.

In this workshop we will explore those same techniques and you will learn how to employ those same skills to master the landscape photos of your dreams. You will have access to Jess’s full kit of tilt/shift lens from the super wide 17 mm T/S for those tight places to the 90mm for those compressed near/far compositions. You will learn how to make your digital SLR do most of the functions of the view camera while learning how to make unique compositions whether you are in a iconic location or one of the seldom visited places we will explore during this unique workshop.

You can check this link to find more detail about the Zion, Bryce, Escalante, Capitol Reef workshop
And YES there is a good chance of getting snow in Bryce during this early spring trip.
