Back to Silver Salmon

Well, we are back and Silver Salmon is as awesome as always for our tours.

As bears are getting on the fish, we are filling flash cards as fast as the bears catch fish. Today is bright and mostly clear so we will be doing our boat trip to puffin island. Check back for more images from Alaska.

Alaska bound and new trips

Today I leave for the great land and more Brown bears. I will try to keep the trip up dates coming as I travel around the state and lead the August Silver Salmon Creek bear photography shoot.

I would like everyone to know I have decided to add a Autumn trip to Zion National park. It is such a great location at this time of the year I can’t stay away and would love to share some of the best and less popular locations.

Yellowstone fires 20 years later

Can it be happening again? fire crews are trying to keep the Le Hardy fire from reaching the historic Fishing Bridge complex. Lake Hotel is not far away.

For the past several days I have been shooting the fire and fighting efforts. I even shot the ghost of a grizzly thru the smoke of the fire. It was the day before and in the location a fire fighter was attacked.

I will be back in the Park tomorrow before leaving for Alaska on the 13th.

Interestingly I was in Alaska during the 88 fires.

While I love to travel it is nice to be home again.

I wonder if that is what this guy was feeling?

I don’t think it is possible to put human feeling on animals actions but this Orca we photographed in Alaska seem to be expressing joy or happiness when he breached 3 times in a row. On the other hand maybe he was just trying to shake off a few barnacles

After a week of hard work on these Alaska grizzlies the only image we felt we had missed was mom and the cubs on the beach. With 2 hours before we needed to pack for our flight home we made one last early morning run.

As you can see the bears sent us off with a fond farewell wave..

In August I will be back with another group to see how the cubs have fared.

This is the smaller of the two we have been concentrating on. Some times it seems to be getting picked on buy the bigger sibling but this one can hold it own. In this moment is seems to want a little attention form mom. It must have worked because the mom nursed them right after this shot.

We had an interesting presentation by the Park Service after dinner. They allow us an insight into the way the NPS makes policy for things such as bear viewing and photography. Afterward we went out to find our favorite quarry.

These Cubs of the Year ( COY) continued to perform and dance for us. The light was fading a 11 PM when we made these shots but it was still nice to watch the youngsters learn and play

Lovely day at Silver Salmon. On our thrid try we were able to get some time with this mom and her babies. They are still a little shy, as new cubs are, but we are going to keep woking on them for the right shot.

The day started with a 2 hour rain delay in Anchorage. With the promise of clearing weather 3 of us took of with bush pilot Tim Smith of Smith Air Charter for Silver Salmon. The others were behind in other aircraft awaiting our directions as we searched for openings is the low ceiling.

When we passed over the beach my heart jumped into my throat as I exclaimed “we have new cubs”. Now 8 hour later I am down loading todays 12 gigs of bear images. All 9 of us have very big smiles. More to come.

Denali Shuffle ll

Denali wolves are a little easier to photograph than their cousins in Yellowstone but when you are on the shuttle it evens out.

We were lucky with this gal when we came upon here next to the road. She offered me a chance with Denali in the background but that shot is a little bushy. Still even in the harsh light she gave us a couple of looks that were not to bad.
