I rarely post about cameras since I believe the Canon/Nikon/Sony battle is one of the least relevant issues for todays photographers.
That said I think the arrival on the Nikon D4 and its availability at B&H today is relevant.
Not because it is so great (and it would seem to be) but because this camera is symbolic of what is happening in the industry today.
To summ up my view of the latest path of the big 2 Canon and Nikon I will just say that it looks from here like Canon has taken the path of marketing more for video and forsaking the still shooter especially those who shoot Sports, Nature and Wildlife. Yes the new Canon DX will have lightning like speed for those shooting JPGS but full frame at 16 mp and no ability to auto focus at F8? This camera would surly be a step back for photographers like me.
Yes I am sure it will have better noise than the 7d or even the great mk4 or the now gone 1DS III, but what are the other real advantages? Not much for my shooting style. Loss of MPS from the 1DsmkIII or the 1.3 crop fact of the MK4 are real downsides for me.
So what does the latest Nikon D4 offer? At this point we can only go from what the maker says but things like the better noise than the current low noise champ the Nikon D3s, continued auto focus at F8 (yes that is a big deal for wildlife shooters) more improvement to the already best in class autofocus, plus what seems to be $1000. cheaper than the comparable (a loose term in this case) Canon product makes this spring a very interesting time to watch as these camera hit the real world tester such as ourselves.
So will I switch from Canon?
UMMM time will tell but I am watching!
