The Chase

This is from a long series of photos of wolves hunting elk calves in Yellowstone. They were shot on one of my recent tours. The cow elk is trying to distract the wolves from where her baby was hidden. Once she allowed the wolves to chase her into the Yellowstone river. A couple of times she chased single wolves to near the top of a near by hill. Still this time the wolves prevailed and made their kill of the elk calf. As a side note I think this is the same cow elk we had previously watched chase a sow grizzly and cub over the hill and out of the valley where this all took place.
I won’t posts the kill shots right now since I feel this image gives the sense of the scene better than that of the calf being killed.
I suppose some would say the wolf is not prominent enough in the scene but this is the feeling of this hunt complete with the sagebrush partially hiding the wolf.

Photo conveys the emotions (if animals can have emotions) of the chase. I like the yellow of the wolf’s eyes and the way it’s low in the sage. Lends to the mystery of the outcome.
