Wyoming Cowboys, South Dakota Black Hills, Wildlife and Devils Tower Photography Workshop

Yes, these cowboys and their ranch are the real deal. With over 10,000 head of cattle and nearly 500,000 acres of land, the ranch will make an incredible subject for this authentic western photography workshop. Combine this with the wonders and wildlife of South Dakota's Black Hills and you have an amazing workshop.

What you will experiance

Autumn in Wyoming is a great time for outdoor photography. The air is clear and crisp in the soft morning light. The cowboys and wildlife start their days early and so will you. This is the best time to capture our subjects no matter whether they are cowboys moving herds of cattle through valleys lined with golden cottonwoods or Big Horn Sheep preparing for their autumn matting rituals. The weather can change but the one constant is that we will put you in the best place to capture great images of the traditional west.

What you will photograph

Your trip will begin with your arrival in Sheridan Wyoming. Sheridan was named in 2012 by Western Horseman Magazine as " King of the Cowboy Towns". We will be based at the famous Padlock Ranch's, Wolf Mountain Lodge near Ranchester Wyoming, where you will capture the spirit of the Wyoming cowboy lifestyle. Here you'll photograph working cowboys going about their actual work; riding, roping and moving herds of cattle in the beautiful scenery of this wonderful location. Of course there will also be plenty of special shots designed just for your camera to create those unique images of the west. This is your chance to capture, with incomparable images, the true essence of working cowboys. Your knowlege and abilitlity to photograph this will be enhanced with the mentoring of National Geographic Cover Photographer, Jess Lee. Jess will be leading the group and teaching the best angles, compositions and techniques to make the most of your experience.

At the end of the days photography, you will return to your cozy room in the beautiful newly built Wolf Mountain Lodge. Constructed of large, finely finished logs and furnished with plush cowboy decor, the lodge is your Wyoming home away from home.

The Wolf Mountain Lodge is nestled on a hillside on the Wyoming side of Ash Creek - a perennial stream running from the Wolf Mountains to the Tongue River, ten miles away. Montana can be viewed from the veranda and is a short walk to the north. The valley is home to mountain lion, bear, bobcat, mule deer, turkey and many species of birds.

Designed to provide a comfortable but elegant base during your stay, the lodge offers family-style dining, common rooms, and eight guest rooms where you will find quiet and calm after a busy day. After dinner, you can linger over dessert and relive highlights of the day, review your images, sit and enjoy the views from your private deck, or enjoy a nice long soak in the hot tub.

After leaving the Padlock ranch on the 15th our next destination will be the Black Hills of South Dakota. Of course we will not miss stopping in Sheridan for a visit to the fabulous Kings Saddlery and Old West Museum.

The Black Hills are filled with American history, natural beauty, and the legends of the old west. This historic region is home to Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, Six National Parks, Devils Tower, and many other sites of the Old West. We will stop along the way to capture images of the strange but wonderful Devil's Tower in the soft afternoon light.

During our time in the Black Hills we will find Pronghorn, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Bison, Prairie Dogs and Bighorn Sheep. There is even a slight chance of a photo of the rare and endangered Black Footed Ferret. The Custer State Park area of the Black Hills is one of the few places I have seen Mountain Lions during daylight. Black Bears also inhabit the area.

Workshop and tour includes all transportation from Sheridan Wyoming airport pickup on the 13th until your departure from Rapid City on the 19th, instruction, park entrance fees, lodging and meals at the Padlock ranch. All other meals are not included.
